Published in 1916, *A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man* is the semi-autobiographical story of Stephen Dedalus, a young Irishman whose journey closely reflects aspects of James Joyce’s own life. The novel follows Stephen from childhood through adolescence and into early adulthood as he navigates family conflict, education, religion, and the expectations of his country. As he grows older, Stephen gradually rejects the beliefs and identities imposed upon him, seeking freedom and a sense of self. Determined to become an artist on his own terms, he ultimately chooses exile in Paris, embracing a life devoted to independence, creativity, and self-discovery.
