Will petrol and diesel cars get cheaper? What the 2035 and 2060 plans actually mean

According to navigator.az, internal combustion engine (ICE) passenger cars in Azerbaijan will be phased out in stages. This is outlined in the document «Azerbaijan's Long-Term Low-Carbon Development Strategy»: by 2035, an initial reduction of the ICE fleet and an increase in the share of electric vehicles is planned, while by 2060 the share of electric and other alternative-energy vehicles in the passenger fleet is expected to reach 100%.

A transport expert cited by the outlet noted that the number of petrol and diesel vehicles today significantly exceeds other types of transport, mainly because alternative vehicles have not yet become mass-market or affordable. The expert stressed that an ordinary driver is not concerned with engine type, but with whether the car runs and meets daily needs.

Europe's experience and Azerbaijan's approach

Per the source, roughly 2-3 years ago many European countries decided to phase out petrol and diesel vehicles by 2035, but the decision was later adjusted after a number of carmakers and consumers reacted critically. The expert said Azerbaijan, as part of the global community, has joined this process as well, with the Prime Minister instructing the Ministry of Finance to prepare a plan incorporating government incentive measures.

The expert also noted that attitudes toward electric vehicles worldwide remain mixed — the disposal of lithium batteries remains an open question, including whether dedicated disposal sites exist. He further pointed out that focusing the market solely on production from one country, China, is not the right approach, since the long-term consequences of this are not yet fully clear.

Should falling prices be a concern?

According to the expert, some car dealers and resellers may exploit this process to scare people into believing that ICE vehicles will lose their value by 2035. However, he stressed there is no such real threat: the process will run through 2060, and even in 2050, an owner will still be able to comfortably drive a petrol or diesel car. The expert added that the charging infrastructure for electric vehicles nationwide has not yet been built, with the situation in the regions being especially weak — a factor that will directly affect the real pace of transition.

What Prayk's data shows

Looking at the current market snapshot, the Prayk catalog lists 53,803 listings in the Cars section, with a median asking price of 14,200 AZN. In addition, there are 28,100 listings for spare parts and accessories, reflecting continued activity in maintaining and repairing the existing ICE fleet. The long-term transition (2035-2060) outlined in the strategy does not suggest any sharp near-term shift in these figures.

Practical takeaway for buyers and sellers

Based on the available information, owners of ICE vehicles have no need for urgent sales or price cuts — the process is planned over decades, and incentive mechanisms are still being developed. Before making a decision to sell or buy, it makes sense to keep an eye on current market conditions. Current listings can be browsed in the Cars section, and spare parts in the Spare Parts category.
