How is it calculated?
- 1. Duty is calculated in dollars by engine size and converted to manats at 1.70; rates differ for new and used cars.
- 2. Excise follows the stepped table of Tax Code article 190.3; it is higher for large engines over 3 years old and for cars over 7 years old.
- 3. VAT 18 % applies to customs value + duty + excise; the recycling fee and paperwork are added on top.

- How is the duty calculated?
- By engine size: up to 1500 cm³ new 0.40 $, used 0.70 $; over 1500 new 0.70 $, used 1.20 $ per cm³. Converted to manats at 1.70.
- How much is the excise?
- Up to 2000 cm³: 0.30 ₼ per cm³; 2001–3000 cm³: 600 ₼ + 5 ₼/cm³; above 3000 the steps are pricier and higher for cars over 3 years old. For cars over 7 years old, from 2026 the excise is multiplied by 1.5 (petrol) or 2 (diesel).
- Are electric and hybrid cars exempt?
- An electric car under 3 years old is exempt from duty and VAT; a hybrid under 3 years old with up to 2500 cm³ is exempt from VAT (duty and excise apply).
- What is the recycling fee?
- A one-off payment for an imported car: 400 ₼ for 4–7 years, 700 ₼ over 7 years; not charged under 4 years.
