How it is calculated
- 1For each model we take the median listing price for every model year (a year needs at least 8 listings).
- 2From these points we find the average rate at which price falls with age: “loss per year” is the average percentage one year of age difference takes off the price.
- 3Only models with at least 6 year points and cars from the last 25 years are included.
- 4“Halving” is the age difference at which two cars of the same model differ in price by a factor of two.
How to read the figures
- This is a snapshot of today’s market: current prices of 2015 and 2016 cars are compared. It is not a forecast of what your car will be worth next year.
- Prices are asking prices from listings; actual sale prices may be somewhat lower.
- Mileage, trim and condition are not taken into account — they can move a specific car’s price well away from the average.
- Models whose price does not clearly fall with age (collector cars, for example) are not listed.
