What is a VIN?
A VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) is the unique 17-character number a factory assigns to every vehicle. It encodes the manufacturer, country, model year and serial number.
Is the check free?
Yes, the VIN check is free and needs no registration.
Why are the model and engine missing for some cars?
Detailed specifications come from the US government registry and only cover cars built for the US market. For European, Korean, Russian and Chinese market cars the VIN gives the manufacturer, country and (when encoded) the year.
What does “check digit does not match” mean?
The 9th character of a VIN is a check digit calculated from the other characters. It is mandatory for North American and Chinese cars — if it doesn't match, the VIN was most likely copied with a mistake. In other markets this character is free-form and isn't an error.
Why put the VIN in a listing?
Buyers can check the car in advance, so such listings are trusted more. Fill in the “VIN” field when posting: your car will be found on this page by its VIN.
