Buying a used treadmill: inspection checklist, motor and prices

When buying a used treadmill, check three main parts: the motor, the belt and the deck — the board under the belt. The console, incline and folding mechanism matter too, but they are usually easier to fix. Prayk currently has 191 treadmill listings with a median price of 600 AZN. Only decide after the treadmill has been run in front of you at different speeds.
Short answer: as of 22 September 2026, the Prayk “Treadmills” section has 191 listings; the median price is 600 AZN and half of the listings fall between 450 and 825 AZN. 62% of listings are in Baku and 17% in Digah. For walking, look for a motor with at least 2.0 CHP of continuous power; for running, 2.5–3.0 CHP and a belt at least 50 cm wide. Run the machine for at least 10–15 minutes before you buy.
What types of treadmills are there?
- Manual (non-motorised). The belt turns under the power of your legs. Cheap, light and needs no electricity, but the speed is not steady and it is mainly for walking.
- Electric home treadmills. Speed is set with buttons, and many fold. The most common type for home use.
- Models with powered incline. The deck angle rises at the push of a button, adding load even when walking.
- Compact walking pads. Low, often without handrails, and fit under a sofa. Walking only — they are not designed for running.
- Commercial (gym) models. Powerful motor, wide belt and heavy frame. They last a long time but are hard to get into and fit in a home.
Motor power, belt size and other specs
Motor power is the most confusing figure in listings. Manufacturers quote two numbers: peak power (a brief maximum) and continuous horsepower (CHP), which the motor sustains through a whole workout. Compare only continuous power; if a listing says “3 HP”, ask the seller which figure it is, or check the model name against the manufacturer’s manual.
| Spec | For walking | For running | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Motor (continuous power) | at least 2.0 CHP | 2.5–3.0 CHP or more | A weak motor overheats under load and wears out quickly |
| Running surface (width × length) | at least 40 × 120 cm | at least 50 × 140 cm | On a narrow belt your foot drifts to the edge; a short belt leaves no room for a long stride |
| Maximum user weight | at least 20 kg above your weight | at least 20 kg above your weight | Near the limit, the motor and deck wear faster |
| Top speed | 6–8 km/h is enough | 14–16 km/h | Running needs speed headroom |
| Incline | a useful extra | powered incline preferred | Adds load without adding speed |
| Cushioning | desirable | important | Softens the impact on knees and ankles |
These are general guidelines: heavier users or those running long distances every day should choose a model with more headroom. On Prayk, sellers often put the maximum weight right in the title — for example, “takes 120 kg” or “max weight 150 kg”.
Inspection checklist for a used treadmill
- Model and label. Copy the model name and serial number from the frame label. Find the specs and manual on the manufacturer’s official website and compare them with the listing.
- Long test. Let it run for at least 10–15 minutes: some faults only appear once the motor warms up.
- Noise. Listen at low, medium and high speed. An even hum is normal; squeaking, knocking or whining can point to bearings, rollers or the motor.
- Belt. There should be no fraying at the edges, no cracks and no shiny worn patches. While running, the belt should stay centred rather than drifting to one side.
- Slip test. Walk fast and plant your foot hard. If the belt hesitates for a moment or jerks, it has stretched or the deck is worn.
- Deck and lubrication. With the machine off, lift the edge of the belt slightly and feel the surface underneath. If it is dry and rough, lubrication has been neglected; ask when it was last done.
- Incline. Raise it from minimum to maximum and back — the movement should be smooth and quiet.
- Console. Check all buttons, the display and the pulse sensors; do the programs work?
- Safety key. Pull out the clip-on key that attaches to your clothing — the belt must stop immediately. Training without the key is dangerous.
- Frame and folding. There should be no cracks or rust at the welds and no play in the folding mechanism; the lock must hold firmly when folded.
If possible, ask for the receipt and warranty card. Some consoles show total distance (in kilometres or hours) in a service menu, which gives an idea of how heavily the treadmill has been used.
What do treadmills sell for on Prayk?
On 22 September 2026, treadmills and exercise bikes on Prayk looked like this (all AZN-priced listings in each section):
| Metric | Treadmills | Exercise bikes |
|---|---|---|
| Listings | 191 | 111 |
| Median price | 600 AZN | 240 AZN |
| Middle half of listings | 450–825 AZN | 160–393 AZN |
| In Baku | 118 listings (62%) | 84 listings (76%) |
| Other main locations | Digah 33, Masazir 11, Gobu 9, Ganja 7 | Digah 11, Sumgait 5 |
The list mixes used treadmills sold from home with new models from shops, so the median reflects the overall market level rather than “the price of a used treadmill”. In practice, finding a home treadmill in good condition for 450–825 AZN is realistic; if the price is well below that, go through the checklist with extra care. A defect you find — a slipping belt, a noisy motor, a dead incline — is grounds for negotiation, but ask a technician for the repair cost first.
If your goal is simply cardio at home, consider an exercise bike too: the median on Prayk is 240 AZN, it takes up less space and usually runs more quietly. The whole fitness and exercise machines section has 702 listings.
Space, noise and transport
- Space. Manufacturer manuals usually recommend about 2 m of clear space behind the treadmill and 0.5 m on each side, so that a stumble does not send you into a wall or furniture. At a steep incline, also check the clearance between your head and the ceiling.
- Noise and neighbours. A dedicated rubber mat under the treadmill reduces vibration and the noise carried into the floor. If you have neighbours below, avoid running late at night.
- Transport. Home treadmills weigh dozens of kilograms: you need at least two people, and you should check the lift and door sizes in advance. Move a folding model locked in the folded position and make sure the console cable is not torn. If you need a vehicle, see the freight transport services section.
- Electrics. Check the cable and plug; if the manual calls for an earthed or dedicated socket, do not run it through an extension lead.
- Payment. Do not pay in advance before seeing and testing the treadmill. Read about suspicious payment requests in chats in this article.
To save on transport, look at listings near you. You can compare several candidates side by side, and if nothing suitable is listed yet, save your search to be notified about new listings.
Frequently asked questions
How powerful should a home treadmill motor be?
For walking, at least 2.0 CHP (continuous horsepower) is recommended; for regular running, 2.5–3.0 CHP or more. A listing may quote peak power, so check the continuous rating for the model in the manufacturer’s manual. Heavier users should choose a stronger motor.
How much does a used treadmill cost?
On 22 September 2026, Prayk had 191 treadmill listings with a median price of 600 AZN, and half of the listings were between 450 and 825 AZN. These figures include both new and used machines; the price of a used treadmill depends on its condition, motor and belt size.
Manual or electric treadmill?
A manual treadmill is cheaper, lighter and needs no power, but it does not hold a steady speed and suits mainly walking. An electric treadmill keeps a constant speed, offers programs and often incline, and is the main choice for running. If you plan to run, choose a motorised model.
Will a treadmill disturb the neighbours in a flat?
Motor noise is rarely the main issue — the bigger problem is footfall impact carried through the floor. A thick rubber mat, a cushioned model and not running late at night reduce this considerably.
Should I buy a treadmill if the belt slips?
Belt slip can sometimes be fixed simply by adjusting the tension, but the cause may be a worn belt or deck. Only buy such a machine after a technician has quoted the repair and you have lowered the price accordingly; otherwise, look for another one.
Sources and methodology
Figures were taken on 22 September 2026 from the public listing feed of the Prayk catalogue: the Treadmills section (191 listings, all included), Exercise bikes (111, all) and Fitness and exercise machines (702). Medians and ranges (p25–p75) are calculated only from listings priced in AZN. A listing price is the seller’s asking price, not the final deal price, and the catalogue does not separate new from used machines. The motor power, belt size and clearance recommendations are general guidelines found in manufacturer manuals; always check the manual for the specific model.
