Primiçka (jump-start) service: what it is and how to do it safely

"Primiçka" is Baku slang derived from the Russian "peremychka" (a jumper cable): starting a car with a flat battery by connecting cables to another car's battery or to a portable jump starter. With a primiçka service, a mechanic comes out on call and starts the engine with cables or a booster. Don't confuse it with "primerka" (trying on clothes) — in car listings, "primiçka" always means a jump start.

Short answer: a jump start helps when the battery has simply run down — lights left on, the car stood for a long time, cold weather. It will not help if the battery is damaged, the alternator is not charging or the starter is faulty. As of 22 September 2026, Prayk's Batteries section has 402 listings; the median price of the latest 300 is 192 AZN, with half between 120 and 338 AZN. The 18 listings in Towing services show a median stated price of 15 AZN.

When do you need a jump start?

The signs of a flat battery are familiar: the starter clicks or turns very slowly when you turn the key, dashboard lights are dim or flicker, and the central locking won't open from the fob. The most common causes are:

  • headlights, cabin light or radio left on overnight;
  • the car hasn't been driven for a long time;
  • the battery loses strength in the cold;
  • the battery is old and no longer holds a charge;
  • extra devices — such as a dash camera in parking mode — draw power while parked.

When won't a jump start help?

Not every engine that won't start has a battery problem. Check the symptoms before calling a mechanic:

How does a primiçka service work?

Mechanics usually use one of three methods:

  1. Cables from a donor car: the mechanic parks next to you and connects the two batteries with cables.
  2. Portable jump starter: no donor car needed; in listings these devices are called "primiçka aparatı", "booster" or "pusk cihazı".
  3. On-the-spot battery replacement: if the old battery no longer holds a charge, the mechanic brings and fits a suitable new one; the battery is charged separately.

If none of these helps, the problem isn't the battery — the car needs to go to a garage on a tow truck.

Safe jump start: step by step

The sequence below is general safety practice; if your car's owner's manual says otherwise, follow the manual.

  1. Switch off the ignition, lights and air conditioning in both cars; the cars must not touch each other.
  2. Inspect the battery: if it is cracked, swollen, leaking or frozen, do not jump it.
  3. Voltages must match: most passenger cars are 12 volts; never connect a truck's 24-volt system directly to a passenger car.
  4. Red cable: first to the "+" terminal of the flat battery, then to the donor's "+".
  5. Black cable: first to the donor's "−" terminal, then to an unpainted metal part of the engine in the car with the flat battery — away from the battery, to reduce the risk of a spark.
  6. Start the donor and let it run for a few minutes, then start the car with the flat battery. If it doesn't start, don't crank for long — pause and try again.
  7. Remove the cables in reverse order: black first, then red.
  8. Don't switch the engine off straight away: drive or let it run so the battery recovers some charge.

Reversing the polarity can damage electronic control units and fuses. Keep open flames and sources of sparks away from the battery — it can give off explosive gas. Hybrids and electric cars may have different jump points and different rules for acting as a donor — always check the manufacturer's instructions.

What does the price depend on?

There is no single tariff for a primiçka service — mechanics set their own prices. The usual factors are the distance to you and out-of-town call-outs, night time, whether the mechanic comes with a donor car or a booster, extra diagnostics and replacing the battery on the spot. For comparison, here are figures from the Prayk catalogue:

WhatOn Prayk (22 Sep 2026)Note
New and used batteriesBatteries: 402 listings, median 192 AZN, half between 120 and 338 AZN93 percent of listings are in Baku
Jump starters and cables7 listings with "primiçka" in the title; examples include a cable set at 25 AZN and devices at 50–110 AZNSmall sample — no median given
Tow truck call-outTowing services: 18 listings, median 15 AZN, half between 15 and 20 AZNStarting price stated in the listing

Agree the total price with the mechanic in advance — call-out, jump start and, if needed, a battery. If you need a replacement, the capacity (Ah), cold cranking current (A), size and terminal layout must suit your car; take a photo of the old battery's label.

How to find a jump-start mechanic on Prayk

  • Masters section: in Automobile service and diagnostics, search for "primiçka" or "akkumulyator". All specialist categories are on the Masters page.
  • Nearby: at night, distance matters — the Nearby page shows listings close to you.
  • No suitable listing? Post a "Looking for" listing and mechanics will contact you — how it works.
  • In chat: give your address, car make and what happened, and ask for the arrival time. Pay after the work is done; be wary of a "mechanic" who asks for a card transfer upfront — protection against chat scams.
  • Your own device: if your car often stands for long periods, look for a portable jump starter in Automotive tools and keep it charged.

Frequently asked questions

What is primiçka?

Primiçka (from the Russian word for a jumper cable) means starting a car with a flat battery by connecting it to another car's battery or to a portable jump starter. With a primiçka service, a mechanic comes on call and starts the engine where the car is parked.

Can a jump start damage my car?

Done correctly, the risk is low. The dangers are reversed polarity, sparks near the battery and trying to jump a damaged or frozen battery — these can damage electronic units and fuses. For hybrids and electric cars, follow the manufacturer's instructions.

What should I do after a jump start?

Don't switch the engine off straight away: drive or let it run so the battery recovers some charge. If the problem returns at the next start, have the battery and alternator checked at a garage — a jump start doesn't fix the cause.

Should I call for a jump start or a tow truck?

If the starter clicks and the lights are dim, try a jump start first. If the lights are bright but the starter is silent, the engine turns but won't fire, or the battery is damaged, the problem lies elsewhere and it is better to tow the car to a garage.

Is a portable jump starter worth buying?

If your car often stands for long periods, is parked outdoors in winter or has an ageing battery, a jump starter lets you start without looking for a donor car. In the Prayk examples such devices cost 50–110 AZN; the device itself also needs regular charging.

Sources and methodology

Figures were taken from the public Prayk catalogue on 22 September 2026: 402 listings in Batteries (median and range from the AZN prices of the latest 300 listings), 18 listings in Towing services (all included) and 7 listings with "primiçka" in the title (small sample, so only the count and example prices). The meaning of "primiçka" is confirmed by listing titles in the catalogue — "primiçka aparatı", "current transfer cables". The safety steps reflect general practice; your car's owner's manual always takes priority.
