Importing non-food goods without a conformity document is banned: what changes for sellers

Azerbaijan's Customs Code has been amended: as navigator.az reports citing president.az, the new law bans bringing non-food consumer goods into the country without a conformity document.

What the amendment says

• Imported non-food consumer goods must be accompanied by a certificate of conformity, a declaration of conformity or recognised foreign conformity documents confirming that they meet the safety requirements of technical regulations.
• Under the Law on Technical Regulation, goods that do not meet the requirements or have not undergone conformity assessment may not be produced, offered for sale, sold, imported or used.
• The aim is to keep unsafe goods out, establish an import control mechanism, and preserve a competitive environment by applying the same regime to local and imported goods.

The practical takeaway for sellers

• Keep the document. A conformity document for an imported product is no longer only a customs matter — it may be requested at the point of sale too.
• Say so in the listing. Warranty period, official import and the existence of documentation are a strong differentiator for buyers; put those details in the description.
• For buyers: in categories such as electronics, appliances and children's goods, ask about certification and warranty before the purchase — any later return dispute depends on it.
