Kitchen range hood: how to choose type, width, power and price

«Yağ çəkən» (literally "grease puller") is what people in Azerbaijan call a kitchen range hood: the appliance above the hob that captures steam, grease and smells while you cook. Choosing the right one comes down to three things: it should be no narrower than your hob, its airflow should match the volume of the kitchen, and its operating mode depends on whether your home has a duct to the outside.

Short answer: for a 60 cm hob, get a hood at least 60 cm wide; size the airflow to the kitchen's volume; and if you cannot vent outside, choose recirculation mode with a charcoal filter. As of 22 September 2026, Prayk's kitchen hoods section has 518 listings; the median price of the latest 300 is 248 AZN, and half of the listings are between 140 and 400 AZN.

What is a range hood and what does it do?

Inside a hood there is a fan (motor) and a filter. The fan draws in air above the hob, and a metal grease filter catches grease droplets. The air is then either ducted out of the building or passed through a charcoal filter and returned to the kitchen. As a result, cabinets, ceiling and curtains collect less grease, smells do not spread to other rooms, and windows fog up less.

In Azerbaijani cooking the difference is especially noticeable: frying, fish, kuku and plov in a cauldron release a lot of steam and grease. In a kitchen without a hood, a greasy film builds up first on top of the wall cabinets and on the ceiling.

What types of range hood are there?

Vent outside or recirculate?

In extraction mode, air goes through a duct into a shaft or out through a hole in the wall. This is the only way to truly remove smell and moisture from the kitchen. But you need a duct: the shorter it is and the fewer bends it has, the more efficient and quieter the hood. Do not use a duct narrower than the hood's outlet — a narrow duct both cuts airflow and adds noise.

In recirculation mode, air passes through a charcoal filter and returns to the kitchen. No duct is needed, but moisture stays in the room and the charcoal filter must be replaced periodically — the manufacturer states the interval in the manual. Most models can work in either mode; the charcoal filter is often not included and is bought separately.

Important in apartment buildings

Many older buildings have a shared ventilation shaft in the kitchen. Connecting a powerful hood to it can push smells to the neighbours and disturb the building's natural ventilation. If the kitchen has a natural-draught gas water heater or boiler, a powerful hood can create negative pressure and pull combustion gases back into the room — a carbon monoxide risk. In such cases, consult the gas utility or a qualified technician before installation, and make sure fresh air can enter while the hood is running.

How to work out size and power

Width

The hood should be at least as wide as the hob, ideally a little wider. For a 60 cm cooker choose 60 cm; for a wider hob, 90 cm. A narrow hood cannot catch steam rising from the outer burners.

Airflow (m³/h)

A widely used calculation: multiply the kitchen's volume (floor area × ceiling height) by 10–12 air changes per hour. For example, a 10 m² kitchen with a 2.7 m ceiling has a volume of 27 m³; 27 × 12 = 324 m³/h. If the duct will be long with bends, add a margin, because the maximum figure in a catalogue is measured under ideal conditions. If the kitchen is open to the living room, calculate for the whole space.

Noise

Noise is given in decibels (dB), usually at maximum speed. For everyday cooking a medium speed is enough, so ask for the noise level at that speed too. A powerful hood on a narrow duct is louder.

Filter, lighting and controls

A metal (aluminium or stainless steel) grease filter should be removable and washable — more often if you fry a lot. LED lighting illuminates the hob well and stays cool. Touch controls are easy to wipe; a timer keeps extracting for a while after cooking and then switches off by itself.

Energy label and mounting height

Besides the energy class, the EU energy label for hoods shows grease filtering and lighting classes and the noise level — look at these lines when comparing two models. The minimum distance between hob and hood is given in the manufacturer's installation manual and is usually larger for gas hobs than for electric ones. Too low is a fire risk; too high and some of the steam escapes around it.

Used supply is thin: of the section's 518 listings, only 8 have «işlənmiş» (used) in the title. So the choice here is mostly among new appliances; if you want a used one, be patient or look at kitchen sets sold together with appliances. You can check how a price compares with the market on the Market prices page.

What should you type in the search box?

Sellers write «aspirator» in the title: on the same day, «yağ çəkən» returned no listings at all in this section, and neither did «filtr». Search for «aspirator» or a brand name, or simply open the section. If no suitable model is listed yet, save your search and you will be told when a new listing appears. To see an appliance in person, the Nearby page shows sellers close to you.

Installation and related parts

If you will not install it yourself, see the home appliance installation section for technicians; ducts and connectors are in Air ducts. If you are renovating the kitchen, plan the hood together with the cooker and kitchen furniture so the width, cabinet size and duct route line up in advance.

What to check when buying a used range hood

  • All speeds. Run each one: there should be no vibration, whistling or rubbing.
  • Grease filter and interior. Remove the filter: a thick layer of grease around the fan means the hood has not been cleaned for a long time.
  • Lights and buttons. Touch panels can be damaged by steam — test every button.
  • Body. There should be no dents, rust or cracks in a glass panel.
  • Charcoal filter. If you will use recirculation, find out whether filters for this model are still sold.
  • Dimensions. Do the width, height and outlet diameter fit your kitchen?
  • Mounting parts. Are the brackets, duct adapter and non-return valve included?

Frequently asked questions

Are «yağ çəkən» and «aspirator» the same thing?

Yes. «Yağ çəkən» is the everyday Azerbaijani name for a kitchen range hood; in catalogues it appears as «mətbəx havalandırıcısı» or «aspirator». When searching listings, the word «aspirator» returns more results.

Should I buy a 60 cm or a 90 cm hood?

A hood should be at least as wide as the hob. For a standard 60 cm cooker, a 60 cm model is enough, but if space allows, one size wider catches steam better. For a wider hob, choose 90 cm.

What if I cannot run a duct outside?

Choose a hood that works in recirculation mode with a charcoal filter. It captures smell and grease but does not remove moisture, so air the kitchen after cooking. Replace the charcoal filter at the interval given in the manual.

How often should I wash the grease filter?

The manufacturer gives the interval, and it depends on how you cook: in a kitchen where frying happens every day, the filter clogs faster. Wash a metal filter in hot water with dish soap, or in the dishwasher if the manual allows it. A greasy filter both reduces airflow and increases fire risk.

How much does a range hood cost on Prayk?

As of 22 September 2026, Prayk's kitchen hoods section has 518 listings. The median price of the latest 300 is 248 AZN, and half of the listings are between 140 and 400 AZN. Only 8 listings have «işlənmiş» (used) in the title, priced from 40 to 300 AZN.

Sources and methodology

Prices come from Prayk's public catalogue on 22 September 2026 and are based on the latest 300 listings in the Kitchen hoods and accessories section; the number of used listings was found by a title search in the same section (8 listings are too few for a median, so only the overall range is given). The median and range are calculated only from listings priced in AZN above zero; where a discount was shown, the discounted price was used. Listing prices are sellers' asking prices, not final sale prices. The airflow calculation and installation notes are general information; for a specific model, follow the manufacturer's installation manual, and for gas-related questions contact your gas utility.
