How heavy rains affect agriculture: when the risk of price rises grows

As navigator.az reports, intensive rainfall observed in several regions in recent days has caused serious damage to agricultural land. Akif Nasirli, head of the Center for Liberal Economists, told Milli.Az that excessive soil moisture, mudslides and flooding damage plant root systems, reduce productivity, and can render some areas completely unusable.

Which sectors suffer most

According to the economist, crops grown in open fields are particularly vulnerable to such weather. Vegetable farming, grain farming and fruit growing are among the most at-risk sectors: "Tomatoes, cucumbers and other vegetables are quickly damaged by excess water. In grain fields, plants lodge, meaning they fall flat. Fruit trees may lose blossoms and face increased disease," Nasirli said. He added that heavy rains also indirectly affect livestock farming, as pastures turning to mud weakens the feed base.

When will prices rise

Nasirli stressed that the extent of price growth will directly depend on the scale of the damage: if the damage is widespread and crop losses are significant, market supply will decrease, which can lead to higher prices. This effect is felt especially quickly for perishable goods. Conversely, if the damage is localized and import opportunities remain active, price increases will be either weak or short-lived. According to the economist, the final outcome depends directly on the intensity and duration of the rainfall.

What Prayk's catalog shows

To track price changes, the Prayk catalog provides real figures. The platform currently has 820,784 listings published, of which 293,875 belong to the "Products" section. If prices for agricultural goods change, this could be reflected in the price dynamics within that category. Readers can follow price fluctuations for seasonal goods in the Products section, and check price history in the Prices section.

Practical steps for buyers and sellers

The key takeaway from the economist's comments is that price increases are not inevitable — everything depends on the scale of the damage. The most practical step for tomorrow is therefore not to wait but to monitor: buyers should regularly check price trends for seasonal goods, while sellers should factor in market conditions when pricing items in segments where supply is shrinking. Comparing prices with dedicated tools makes such decisions better informed.
