Annual cost of owning a car in Azerbaijan: fuel, insurance, inspection

Running an ordinary private car in Azerbaijan costs roughly 1,600–4,200 AZN a year at 15,000 km. According to Prayk’s annual cost calculator, a 2020 2.0-litre petrol car costs about 2,248 AZN a year (187 AZN a month), and 69% of that is fuel. Below is a cost table for six typical cars, how each line is calculated and how to bring the total down.

Short answer: as calculated on 27 September 2026, the yearly out-of-pocket cost at 15,000 km is: 1.8-litre hybrid (2018) — about 1,644 AZN, 2.0-litre diesel (2018) — about 1,883 AZN, 2.0-litre petrol (2020) — about 2,248 AZN, 1.6-litre petrol (2013) — about 2,405 AZN, 3.5-litre petrol (2015, AI-95) — about 4,172 AZN, electric car (2023) — about 485 AZN. This covers compulsory insurance, technical inspection, fuel and estimated servicing; depreciation is shown separately.

How much do six typical cars cost per year?

The figures come from Prayk’s public car-costs calculator on 27 September 2026. All assume 15,000 km a year and AI-92 fuel (AI-95 for the 3.5-litre car); amounts are rounded to the manat.

The inspection column is a yearly average: cars aged 5–10 are inspected every two years, so half of the 30 AZN fee — 15 AZN — is shown. The table makes it clear that most of the cost is fuel and servicing, not state charges: for the 2.0-litre petrol car, insurance and inspection together come to 95 AZN a year, while fuel is 1,553 AZN.

How is each line calculated?

  • Compulsory insurance. A base of 50 AZN is multiplied by an engine-size coefficient: up to 1,500 cm³ — 1; 1,501–2,000 cm³ — 1.5; 2,001–2,500 — 2; 2,501–3,000 — 2.5; 3,001–3,500 — 3; 3,501–4,000 — 3.5; 1.5 for electric cars. The bonus-malus coefficient, which depends on the driver’s claims history, is not included. We have a separate guide on compulsory insurance versus comprehensive cover.
  • Technical inspection. The calculator uses a 30 AZN state fee with an age-based frequency: no inspection in the first 5 years, every two years at 5–10 years, every year after 10. A recycling fee is also paid at inspection: 10 AZN at 4–9 years, 20 AZN at 10–19, 30 AZN at 20–29, 40 AZN for older cars.
  • Fuel. Consumption is estimated from engine size (allowing for Baku traffic): for petrol, 4 + 2.5 × litres (1.6 L → 8 L/100 km, 3.5 L → 12.8 L); diesel uses 20% less, a hybrid 35% less, a plug-in hybrid 50% less, a gas-powered car 15% more; an electric car 18 kWh/100 km. Prices used: AI-92 — 1.15 AZN/L, AI-95 — 1.60 AZN/L, diesel — 1.10 AZN/L, gas — 0.65 AZN, electricity — 0.10 AZN/kWh.
  • Servicing. Oil, filters, brake pads, tyres and similar — an age-based estimate: 350 AZN up to 4 years, 600 AZN at 5–9 years, 900 AZN over 10; 40% of that for an electric car.
  • Depreciation is not included in the total because it is not cash out of pocket. The calculator shows it separately: 12% a year up to 2 years, 8% at 3–7 years, 5% from 8 years. By this rule a 6-year-old car worth 25,000 AZN loses about 2,000 AZN a year.

Do you pay road tax?

The calculator has no separate road tax line. Under the road tax chapter of the Tax Code, the payers are foreign vehicles entering Azerbaijan and persons who produce or import petrol, diesel and liquefied gas in the country. In other words, the owner of a locally registered private car does not pay this tax separately — it is built into the fuel price. This is general information; check the exact rules in the Tax Code on e-qanun.az.

How do mileage and fuel type change the total?

Fuel cost rises in direct proportion to mileage, while the other lines stay almost fixed. For the 2020 2.0-litre petrol car:

Mileage per yearFuel (AI-92)Total per yearPer month
10,000 km1,035 AZN1,730 AZN144 AZN
15,000 km1,553 AZN2,248 AZN187 AZN
25,000 km2,588 AZN3,283 AZN274 AZN

Filling the same car with AI-95 instead of AI-92 raises fuel cost at 15,000 km from 1,553 to 2,160 AZN — about 608 AZN more a year. Check the manufacturer’s manual for the fuel your car needs. At the same mileage a hybrid or diesel costs 360–600 AZN a year less than the petrol equivalent, and an electric car charged at the household rate is the cheapest of all — though its purchase price and access to charging are separate questions.

How much do tyres and parts cost?

The servicing line is a rough average; you can check real prices for your car in the listings. Prayk’s Tires section had 3,231 listings on 27 September 2026. Among the latest 300 listings with a rim size in the title, the median asking price was about 140 AZN for R15 (32 listings), about 210 AZN for R16 (35) and about 265 AZN for R17 (46). The median is the middle price when listings are sorted by price. Some listings are for a single tyre and some for a set, new and used are mixed, so treat the figures as a guide. Other parts are in Spare parts and accessories.

How can you cut the annual cost?

  1. Compare running costs when choosing a car. Every car listing on Prayk has an “Annual cost of ownership” block calculated from that car’s engine size, year and fuel; you can change the mileage and the AI-92/AI-95 choice.
  2. Mind the engine size. Going above 2,000 cm³ raises insurance from 75 to 100 AZN, and above 3,000 cm³ to 150 AZN; the fuel difference is far larger.
  3. Use the fuel your manual specifies. Unnecessary AI-95 costs hundreds of manats a year.
  4. Don’t miss inspection years. For a car over 5 years old, put the date in your calendar.
  5. If you are thinking of importing, first read our customs duty guide and try the customs calculator — import costs are usually several times the annual running cost.
  6. Track your car’s market value. “What’s my car worth?” helps you compare depreciation with real listings; browse options in the Cars section.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to keep a car per month?

Based on Prayk’s calculation of 27 September 2026 at 15,000 km a year, a 2020 2.0-litre petrol car costs about 187 AZN a month, a 2018 1.8-litre hybrid 137 AZN and a 2015 3.5-litre petrol car 348 AZN. Depreciation is not included.

How much is compulsory car insurance?

In the calculator a 50 AZN base is multiplied by an engine-size coefficient: 50 AZN up to 1,500 cm³, 75 AZN for 1,501–2,000 cm³, 100 AZN for 2,001–2,500 cm³ and 150 AZN for 3,001–3,500 cm³. The bonus-malus coefficient is not included.

When does a car need technical inspection?

Under the rule used by Prayk’s calculator, no inspection is needed in the first 5 years, it is every two years at 5–10 years and every year after 10; the fee is 30 AZN plus an age-based recycling fee of 10–40 AZN. Check the exact requirements with the State Road Police.

Are hybrids and electric cars really cheaper to run?

In annual running costs, yes: at the same 15,000 km a 1.8-litre hybrid costs about 1,644 AZN, a 2023 electric car about 485 AZN and a 2.0-litre petrol car about 2,248 AZN. For the final decision, also weigh the purchase price, battery condition and access to charging.

Do private car owners pay road tax?

Under the Tax Code, road tax is paid by foreign vehicles and by persons who produce or import fuel; the owner of a local private car pays it indirectly through the fuel price. Check your own situation with an official source.

Sources and methodology

The annual costs were taken from Prayk’s public calculator (/api/public/car-costs) on 27 September 2026; the same calculation powers the “Annual cost of ownership” block on every car listing. The calculator’s rules: compulsory insurance 50 AZN × engine-size coefficient; 30 AZN inspection fee with age-based frequency; the recycling fee paid at inspection; fuel — estimated consumption by engine size × annual mileage (default 15,000 km) × price (AI-92 1.15, AI-95 1.60, diesel 1.10, gas 0.65 AZN/L, electricity 0.10 AZN/kWh); servicing — an age-based estimate; depreciation — separate. Rates are as of 1 January 2026. Real consumption, driving style and bonus-malus are not taken into account — the result is an estimate. Tyre prices were calculated from the 300 most recent listings in the “Tires” section with a rim size (R15/R16/R17) in the title, AZN prices only.
