Mini washing machine: which type to choose for a small flat

Mini washing machine: which type to choose for a small flat

A small (mini) washing machine suits a small flat, a dorm, a country house or a second “helper” machine, but “small” covers four different types: a portable mini washer, a semi-automatic twin-tub, a top-loading automatic and a slim front-loading automatic. The right choice depends on three questions: how much space you have, whether there is a water supply and how much laundry you wash at once. As of 22 September 2026, Prayk has 1,806 washing machine listings; mini, compact and semi-automatic models are a narrow slice of this market and sell for 40–150 AZN.

Short answer: no water supply — a semi-automatic twin-tub; water supply but little space — a slim or top-loading automatic; small items only — a portable mini washer. Prayk (22.09.2026) has 1,806 washing machine listings, with a median of 248 AZN across the latest 500 (half between 170 and 350 AZN). Listings with “mini” (6), “yarımavtomat” (semi-automatic, 7) and “kompakt” (5) in the title cost 40–150 AZN.

What types of small washing machines are there?

To tell the types apart, check two things: whether the machine connects to the water supply and whether it spins and rinses by itself. The sizes below are typical; a specific model's data sheet may differ.

TypeTypical sizeLoadWater supplyWho it suits
Portable mini washersmall, carried by handusually 1–3 kgnot needed, water poured in by handstudents, baby clothes, travel, small items
Semi-automatic twin-tubwide, low body, top loadingusually 4–8 kgnot neededcountry house, village, no plumbing
Top-loading automaticwidth ≈ 40 cm, depth ≈ 60 cmusually 5–7 kgneedednarrow bathroom, no room for a front door to open
Slim front-loading automaticwidth ≈ 60 cm, depth 33–45 cmusually 4–7 kgneededhousehold of 2–3, narrow hallway or bathroom
Standard front-loader (for comparison)width ≈ 60 cm, depth 55–60 cmusually 6–10 kgneededlarge family, duvets and bulky items

In a twin-tub, one tub washes and the other spins: you fill and drain the water yourself and move the laundry between tubs by hand. An automatic runs the whole cycle — filling, heating, washing, rinsing and spinning — on its own. A top-loader is narrow enough to fit between two cabinets, but the space above it must stay free because the lid opens upwards, so it cannot go under a worktop.

How to choose the load: how many kilograms is enough?

The load (kg) is the maximum weight of dry laundry on the cotton programme. On synthetics and wool programmes the limit is usually about half that. To picture the capacity, look at the approximate dry weight of everyday items:

ItemApprox. dry weightHow many fit in a 3 kg drum
Men's shirt0.2–0.3 kgabout 10
Jeans0.6–0.8 kg4
Large bath towel0.5–0.7 kg4–5
Double bed linen set1.5–2 kg1 set plus a few small items

A practical rule: 3–4 kg is enough for one person or someone who washes little and often; 5–6 kg is comfortable for a household of 2–3; if you want to wash bed linen and thick clothes easily, do not rely on a drum smaller than 6 kg. Do not pack the drum full — laundry needs to move inside, otherwise it washes poorly and the machine vibrates more.

What to measure before buying?

  1. Width, depth and height of the space: leave a few centimetres at the sides for vibration and room for the hoses at the back.
  2. Door clearance: a front-loader needs free space in front for the door, a top-loader needs it above.
  3. Route into the flat: the entrance door, hallway and bathroom door must be wider than the machine.
  4. Water and drain: an automatic needs a cold-water tap and a drain point nearby; the drain hose length is limited.
  5. Electricity: an earthed socket; connecting through an extension lead is not recommended.
  6. Floor: a level, solid surface reduces vibration, which matters especially for a slim machine.

What do small machines cost on Prayk?

Sample (Washing machines section)ListingsPrice
All washing machines1,806median 248 AZN, half 170–350 AZN
“yarımavtomat” (semi-automatic) in the title750–150 AZN
“mini” in the title640–120 AZN
“kompakt” (compact) in the title540–110 AZN
“yuxarıdan” (top-loading) in the title480–90 AZN

The numbers show one thing clearly: small machines are a narrow segment, and the vast majority of offers in the section are standard-size front-loaders. The samples are small (4–7 listings each), so only a range is given instead of a median, and some listings fall into more than one sample. Small models are sold not only in Baku but also in Ganja, Gusar, Sumgayit and Mingachevir; across the whole section, 67% of the latest 500 listings are in Baku (333), followed by Digah (77) and Sumgayit (19).

On a tight budget, compare two routes: a new or nearly new mini or twin-tub (40–150 AZN), or a used standard automatic — a quarter of the listings in the section cost 170 AZN or less. The second route gives more features but needs space and careful inspection. Small models appear rarely, so it pays to save your search: for a query like “mini paltaryuyan”, Prayk will notify you as soon as a new listing appears. All offers are in the Washing machines section.

Limitations of mini and semi-automatic machines

  • Manual work: in a twin-tub, water is filled and drained by hand, and laundry is moved between tubs for rinsing.
  • Hot water: many simple mini and twin-tub models have no heater — for a hot wash you heat and pour the water yourself.
  • Spin: small machines usually spin slower, so laundry comes out wetter and takes longer to dry.
  • Bulky items: duvets, curtains and thick winter clothes do not fit in a small drum or wash poorly.
  • Programmes: simple models often have only a timer and one or two modes, with no separate programme for delicates.

Other ways to save space

If the main problem is drying rather than space, a washer-dryer gives two functions in one appliance. A tumble dryer can also be stacked on top of the washer with a special stacking kit — use a kit approved by the manufacturers of both appliances. Dryers are listed in the Clothes dryers section. If there is room in the kitchen, a model of suitable height under the worktop frees up the bathroom completely.

If you are buying a used small machine

The simple design of small machines makes repairs easier, but inspection still matters: see the machine running, turn the drum by hand and listen to it, and during the spin watch for vibration and any water leaking underneath. A step-by-step checklist, price ranges and questions for the seller are in a separate guide: Used washing machine: what to check before buying. If you need a technician after buying, see the washing machine and dryer repair section.

Frequently asked questions

What load does a small washing machine take?

Portable mini washers usually take 1–3 kg, semi-automatic twin-tubs 4–8 kg and slim automatics 4–7 kg of laundry. 3–4 kg is enough for one person, 5–6 kg for a household of 2–3.

Which washing machine works without a water supply?

Semi-automatic twin-tubs and portable mini washers do not need plumbing: you pour the water in with a bucket or hose and drain the dirty water through a hose. An automatic machine, by contrast, requires a tap and a drain point.

How much does a mini washing machine cost?

As of 22 September 2026, the 6 washing machine listings on Prayk with “mini” in the title cost 40–120 AZN, and the 7 listings with “yarımavtomat” (semi-automatic) cost 50–150 AZN. For comparison, the median of the latest 500 listings in the whole section is 248 AZN.

How does a slim machine differ from a standard one?

A slim machine has the same width as a standard one (about 60 cm) but a depth of 33–45 cm instead of 55–60 cm. Its drum is therefore smaller and usually takes 4–7 kg of laundry. Placing it on a level, solid floor is especially important to reduce vibration.

Can you wash a duvet in a mini washing machine?

Usually not. A duvet or thick bedspread does not fit into a small drum by weight or volume, and even if it does, it washes poorly and overloads the machine. For such items a machine of 7 kg or more, or a carpet and duvet cleaning service, is a better fit.

Sources and methodology

Listing counts and prices come from Prayk's public catalogue on 22 September 2026: the total number of listings in the “Washing machines” section (1,806) and price statistics for the latest 500, plus title searches within that section for “mini”, “yarımavtomat”, “kompakt” and “yuxarıdan”. Median and range are calculated from AZN prices only; no median is given for samples of fewer than 15 listings. Listings spelled differently (for example, “yarı avtomat”) may not appear in the search, so the real number of small machines may be slightly higher. Sizes and loads are typical market values; for a specific model, check the manufacturer's data sheet.
