Used washing machine: what to check before buying and prices

Buying a used washing machine pays off on one condition: you see it running and put it through a 20-minute check. The most expensive faults — a worn drum bearing, a leaking tub and a faulty control board — do not show in photos but are easy to detect by hand and by ear. As of 22 September 2026, Prayk has 196 washing machine listings with “işlənmiş” (used) in the title; the median price is 200 AZN and half of them are between 150 and 250 AZN.
Short answer: the typical price of a used automatic washing machine on Prayk is 150–250 AZN (196 listings, median 200 AZN, 22.09.2026). The median for a used Samsung is 200 AZN and for a used LG 225 AZN. Before buying, check the drum by hand, run the machine on a short programme and a spin cycle, look for leaks underneath and ask about the transit bolts.
How much does a used washing machine cost on Prayk?
| Sample (Washing machines section) | Listings | Median price | Middle half |
|---|---|---|---|
| All listings (prices from the latest 500) | 1,806 | 248 AZN | 170–350 AZN |
| “işlənmiş” (used) in the title | 196 | 200 AZN | 150–250 AZN |
| used + Samsung | 47 | 200 AZN | 150–250 AZN |
| used + LG | 56 | 225 AZN | 198–250 AZN |
| LG in the title (new and used together) | 345 | 250 AZN | 200–630 AZN |
The used market is tight: half of the listings fall within a band only 100 AZN wide — 150–250 AZN. The brand gap is small: the median for a used LG is 25 AZN higher than for a Samsung. Across all listings mentioning LG, however, the top quarter starts at 630 AZN — a sign that shops sell new models in the same section. So make sure a listing is actually used and compare it only with used machines.
The price of a used machine is driven mainly by load (kg), age, an inverter motor, a drying function and condition. Read the description carefully when a price is well below the market: it often contains notes such as “needs repair” or “programme not working”. 63% of used listings are in Baku (123 of 196), followed by Digah (18) and Khirdalan (13). All offers are in the Washing machines section.
What to ask the seller before meeting?
A few questions by message can save a wasted trip. Contact the seller via Prayk chat or a call and ask:
- Brand, model and load: ask for a photo of the rating plate — it is usually around the door or on the back panel.
- Age and reason for selling: how many years has it been used, and why is it being sold?
- Repair history: has it been repaired, and what was replaced — bearing, pump, heater, control board?
- Demonstration: will the machine be connected to water and power at the viewing?
- Transit bolts: are the screws that lock the drum during transport still there?
- Kit: are the inlet and drain hoses included?
- Transport: who dismantles and moves the machine, and is it included in the price?
Do not send a deposit or prepayment before seeing the machine. We covered suspicious payment requests in detail in our article on chat safety.
The 20-minute on-site check: what to look at?
| What to check | How | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Drum and bearing | Turn the empty drum by hand, then rock it up and down | Rumbling, grinding, noticeable play |
| Shock absorbers | Press the drum down and let go | The drum does not settle at once, bounces several times or knocks |
| Door seal (gasket) | Open the folds by hand and inspect | Tears, holes, black mould |
| Water intake and drain | Start a short programme | No water comes in, slow draining, an error code on the display |
| Heating | On a warm programme (40–60 °C), touch the door glass after a while | The glass stays cold — the heater or sensor may be faulty |
| Spin | Run the spin cycle separately | Heavy vibration, the machine moving across the floor, a metallic noise |
| Leaks | After the programme, look under and behind the machine | A puddle, traces of rust or limescale |
| Filter and pump | Open the filter flap at the bottom (put a cloth underneath) | Lots of debris, a bad smell — a sign of neglect |
| Door lock and buttons | Try all programmes and buttons | The lock does not engage, a button does not work, the display goes off |
| Casing and cable | Inspect the body, plug and cable | Deep rust, a melted plug, a cable wrapped in tape |
Bearing noise is the most important signal: replacing the bearing is labour-intensive, and on an old machine the repair often costs close to the machine's own value. Vibration during the spin is not always a fault — the machine may be standing on an uneven floor, so if you see vibration, first check that it is level.
How to find out the machine's age?
The rating plate shows the model and serial number; many manufacturers encode the year and month of production in the serial number. You can confirm the decoding on the manufacturer's official website or with its support service. Searching for the model name also gives a rough idea of when it went on sale. Spare parts can be hard to find for older models, so always factor age into the negotiation. A machine with a missing or worn-off plate is an extra risk.
How to negotiate the price?
- Know the market price: Prayk listing pages have a market price indicator based on similar listings, and the market prices page shows the wider picture.
- Ask for a discount for faults: a torn seal, old hoses, missing transit bolts or a clogged filter — each is a real cost.
- Count the transport: if moving and installation are not on the seller, add their cost to the price when comparing.
- Be careful with very cheap listings: if the price is well below the market, ask why and always see the machine running.
Transport and first start-up
Transit bolts keep the drum still during transport: they are fitted before moving and must be removed after installation — a machine started with the bolts in can be seriously damaged. If the bolts are missing, a kit for your model can be bought separately. Move the machine upright where possible, and once in place level it using the adjustable feet. If you need a technician for installation or repair, see the washing machine and dryer repair section.
When should you walk away?
- The drum rumbles or grinds when turned, or there is noticeable play.
- The tub itself leaks, or water appears from under the casing.
- The seller refuses to show the machine running.
- There is a burning smell during operation, or the circuit breaker trips.
- You are asked to prepay without seeing the machine.
If space is tight or there is no water supply, consider compact types instead of a standard machine: Mini washing machine: which type to choose for a small flat.
Frequently asked questions
How much is it normal to pay for a used washing machine?
As of 22 September 2026, the 196 washing machine listings on Prayk with “işlənmiş” (used) in the title have a median price of 200 AZN, and half of them are between 150 and 250 AZN. The price depends on load, age, an inverter motor and condition.
How can you tell that the bearing is worn?
Turn the empty drum by hand: if you hear grinding or rumbling, the bearing is probably worn. Noticeable play when rocking the drum up and down is the same sign. A loud roar during the spin confirms the fault. It is better not to buy such a machine, as the repair is expensive.
What are transit bolts and why do they matter?
They are screws at the back that lock the drum to the casing. They stop the drum from swinging during transport and damaging the shock absorbers and bearing. They are fitted before moving and must be removed after installation.
Used Samsung or LG?
On Prayk (22.09.2026), the 47 Samsung listings with “işlənmiş” (used) in the title have a median of 200 AZN, and the 56 LG listings 225 AZN. The difference is small; the age, load and condition of the specific machine matter more than the brand.
What if the seller cannot show the machine running?
You can still check the drum, seal, filter and casing, but water intake, heating and spin remain untested. In that case either price in the risk of a fault or arrange to meet where the machine can be connected and tested. If you do not want to take the risk, choose another listing where the machine is shown working.
Sources and methodology
Listing counts and prices come from Prayk's public catalogue on 22 September 2026: the total number of listings in the “Washing machines” section (1,806) and price statistics for the latest 500, plus title searches within that section for “işlənmiş”, “işlənmiş samsung”, “işlənmiş lg” and “lg”. Median and range (the middle half of listings, p25–p75) are calculated from AZN prices only. Used machines without the word “işlənmiş” in the title are not in the sample, so the real used supply is larger. The checklist is general information; for a specific model, follow the manufacturer's manual.
