Congestion-charge zones in Baku: preparation has begun — what to weigh when choosing a home

Alongside the regions, toll roads are expected in Baku as well. According to navigator.az, the Azerbaijan Land Transport Agency (AYNA) is procuring technical advisory services for a project to create paid traffic zones in Baku: a single-source contract worth 307,000 manats has been signed with the Spanish firm IDOM Consulting, Engineering & Architecture S.A.A., founded in Bilbao in 1957 and specialising in consulting, engineering and architecture.

An important caveat: at this stage this is an advisory contract. Zone boundaries, tariffs and a start date have not been announced, so it is too early to expect concrete numbers.

How this touches a property search

In cities with charge zones the cost of a flat is not measured in square metres alone: whether your daily route crosses the zone becomes a monthly expense. The saving from a «cheaper district» is sometimes eaten by transport costs. That is why it makes sense to start a property search from the address.
