Choosing a lawn mower: petrol, electric, cordless or string trimmer

The main factor in choosing a lawn mower is the size and slope of your plot: a small yard close to a socket is well served by a corded electric mower or a trimmer, a mid-sized garden split into several patches suits a cordless battery model, and a large, steep or overgrown plot calls for a petrol mower. Edges, the areas around tree trunks and stony ground are a job for a string trimmer (brush cutter), not a wheeled mower. Prayk currently has 41 listings in this section, and half of them are priced between 80 and 350 AZN.
Short answer: as of 22 September 2026, Prayk's "Lawn mowers and trimmers" section has 41 listings; the median price is 120 AZN and half of the listings sit between 80 and 350 AZN. Listings mentioning "benzin" (petrol) and "elektrik" (electric) number 14 each. Across the whole catalogue, the word "otbiçən" (mower) appears in 282 listings — most of them are posted in general sections, and the list also includes spare parts.
What types of lawn mower are there?
By power source and design there are four main types. Getting the type right matters more than the wattage: even the most powerful model of the wrong type will be awkward on your plot.
- Corded electric mower — wheeled deck running on 220 V mains. Light and quiet, no oil or petrol to deal with. Your range is limited by the extension cable, and you need to keep the cable away from the blade.
- Cordless (battery) mower — electric, no cable. You move freely and the noise is low. Battery capacity (Ah, amp-hours) and voltage (V) determine how much lawn you cut per charge; a spare battery is an extra cost. Garden tools of the same brand often share batteries — if you already own one, that is a saving.
- Petrol mower — wheeled machine with a combustion engine. The most powerful type and independent of mains power, it handles tall, dense grass. It is loud and heavy and needs regular servicing: engine oil, air filter and spark plug. On self-propelled models the engine drives the wheels — a real relief on slopes.
- String trimmer (brush cutter) — a long-shaft tool held by hand or on a shoulder harness. It cuts with nylon line or a metal disc/blade and comes in electric, cordless and petrol versions. Anywhere a wheeled mower cannot reach — along fences, around trees, on slopes and stony soil — is trimmer territory.
Which type suits your garden?
The table gives general direction. Check a specific model's capability against its spec sheet: manufacturers usually state the "recommended lawn area" (m²) and the cutting width.
| Plot and conditions | Suitable type | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Small yard, flat lawn, socket nearby | Corded electric mower or electric trimmer | Cable length, machine weight, grass box |
| Mid-sized garden, several separate lawn patches | Cordless battery mower | Battery capacity, charging time, spare battery |
| Large plot, tall or dense grass, no electricity | Petrol mower, self-propelled on slopes | Engine size (cc), cutting width, service and parts |
| Edges, tree bases, slopes, scrub | String trimmer / brush cutter | Line or disc, shoulder harness, weight, vibration |
For most yards a practical kit is a wheeled mower plus a trimmer: the mower covers the open lawn quickly and the trimmer finishes the edges.
How much do lawn mowers cost on Prayk?
The figures were calculated from the Prayk catalogue on 22 September 2026. The section is small, so a median is shown only where the sample is large enough; small groups show just the count and price range.
| Selection | Listings | Price |
|---|---|---|
| "Lawn mowers and trimmers" section | 41 | median 120 AZN; half 80–350 AZN |
| Same section, word "benzin" (petrol) | 14 | 50–660 AZN; half 100–150 AZN (small sample) |
| Same section, word "elektrik" (electric) | 14 | 50–920 AZN (from trimmers to new mowers) |
| Same section, word "trimmer" | 6 | 55–260 AZN |
| Whole "Garden equipment" section | 200 | median 110 AZN; half 55–302 AZN |
| Whole catalogue, word "otbiçən" | 282 | median 250 AZN; half 120–700 AZN (spare parts included) |
Three practical conclusions follow. First, the dedicated section has many used-mower listings, which is why the median is 120 AZN. Second, a catalogue-wide search for "otbiçən" returns 282 results: only 29 of them are in the dedicated section, 127 are posted in the general "Products" section, and 89% are in Baku. That list also catches spare parts such as starters and gearboxes, so its median is higher. Third, listings mentioning "elektrik" range from 50 to 920 AZN — a cheap electric trimmer and a new wheeled mower show up under the same word, so do not compare prices without opening the listing and checking the type.
Do not stop at the section: type "otbiçən", "qazonbiçən", "trimmer" and "benzokosa" into the search box one at a time. 61% of the listings in the dedicated section are in Baku, the rest in Digah, Quba and Agstafa. If the model you want is not listed yet, save your search and you will be notified when a new listing appears. Do not know the model name? Search by photo finds similar listings.
Which specs matter before you buy?
- Cutting width — the wider the deck (the housing in which the blade spins), the fewer passes you need; but manoeuvring in tight spots gets harder.
- Cutting height adjustment — a single lever that raises all wheels at once is convenient. Cutting too short in a hot summer scorches the lawn, so being able to change height by season helps.
- Grass box and mulching — the box collects clippings; mulching (chopping clippings finely and returning them to the lawn) saves you from constantly emptying the bag.
- Deck material — plastic is lighter, steel is tougher but needs protection from rust.
- Engine type (petrol) — a 4-stroke engine takes oil separately; in a 2-stroke engine (most budget trimmers) oil is mixed into the petrol at the manufacturer's ratio. A wrong mix ruins the engine quickly.
- Spare parts — make sure blades, line, air filters and starters are available. Prayk has a separate Garden equipment accessories section for them.
What to check when buying a used mower?
Most listings in the section are used machines, so take a checklist to the meeting and always see the mower running.
| What to check | How | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Engine start | Start it from cold in front of the seller | Hard starting, bluish smoke (burning oil) |
| Blade and deck | Switch off; on petrol models pull the spark plug cap first | Bent blade, cracked or rusted-through deck |
| Vibration | Hold the handle while it runs | Strong vibration — unbalanced blade or bent shaft |
| Cable and switch (electric) | Inspect the cable along its full length | Insulating tape, crushed spots, burning smell |
| Battery (cordless) | Run it for a few minutes on a full charge | Quick loss of power, battery heating up |
| Paperwork | Ask for a receipt or warranty card | No paperwork is a bargaining point |
How to maintain a lawn mower?
Sharpen the blade once or twice a season and check its balance afterwards: a dull blade tears grass instead of cutting it, and the tips turn yellow. On a petrol mower change the oil at the running-hour interval the manufacturer gives and clean the air filter. Before winter storage drain the tank or run the engine until it stops — stale petrol clogs the carburettor. With an electric mower do not drag the cable over wet grass and keep the switch dry. Do not store a cordless mower's battery fully discharged over winter, and keep it indoors rather than in a cold shed.
For safety, clear stones, wire and branches before mowing, and wear closed shoes and safety glasses — trimmers in particular throw stones. Keep children and pets away. Whenever you need to inspect the blade or clear wrapped grass, switch the machine off: unplug an electric model, pull the spark plug cap on a petrol one.
If you are selling your mower
State the type (petrol, electric, cordless, trimmer), brand and model, power, cutting width, how many seasons it has worked and what has been replaced. A short video of the machine running answers a buyer's first question. To price it in line with the market, check the market prices page and similar listings in Lawn mowers and trimmers. Post it in the right subsection of Garden equipment — that is where buyers look first. The rules of a listing that sells fast are in this guide. If you plan to redo the lawn, the Lawns section has grass seed and turf offers.
Frequently asked questions
Which lawn mower do I need for a small yard?
For a small, flat yard close to a socket, a corded electric mower or an electric trimmer is usually enough: they are light, quiet and need no oil or petrol. If the lawn is split into several separate patches, a cordless battery model is more convenient.
Should I choose a petrol or a cordless lawn mower?
For a large plot with tall grass and no electricity, a petrol mower is more powerful and independent, but it is loud and needs regular oil, filter and spark plug changes. For a tidy mid-sized lawn, a cordless mower is quieter and easier to maintain; the main extra cost is a spare battery.
Can a string trimmer replace a lawn mower?
Partly. A trimmer handles edges, tree bases, slopes and stony spots, but on a wide flat lawn it is much slower than a wheeled mower and the cutting height comes out uneven. On a small, uneven plot a trimmer alone may do; on a large lawn the two complement each other.
How much does a lawn mower cost on Prayk?
As of 22 September 2026, Prayk's "Lawn mowers and trimmers" section has 41 listings; the median price is 120 AZN and half of the listings cost 80–350 AZN. The 282 listings across the whole catalogue that mention "otbiçən" have a median of 250 AZN, because they include new-machine offers from general sections and spare parts.
Nylon line or a metal blade on a trimmer?
Nylon line is for soft grass and edging and is less dangerous if it hits a stone. A metal disc or blade is for thick-stemmed weeds and scrub, but it needs a stronger engine and a shoulder harness. Fit a blade only to a trimmer whose manufacturer allows it.
Sources and methodology
Price and listing counts were taken from Prayk's public catalogue API on 22 September 2026. All 41 listings in "Lawn mowers and trimmers", 200 listings in "Garden equipment" and 282 catalogue-wide listings mentioning "otbiçən" were reviewed. The median and the lower and upper quartiles (the middle half of listings) were calculated from AZN prices only; no median is given for groups of fewer than 15 listings. A listing price is the seller's asking price; the actual sale price may differ. Technical advice is general — for a specific model follow the manufacturer's manual.
