First car on a budget: what 10k, 15k, 20k and 30k AZN buys

Your first-car budget largely decides the car's age and mileage. As of 27 September 2026, Prayk's Cars section has 6,734 listings priced 8,000–12,000 AZN, and the median model year in that band is 2007. At 18,000–22,000 AZN the median year rises to 2014, and at 26,000–34,000 AZN to 2016. Below are the most common models for each budget, typical mileage and the running costs after purchase.
Short answer: according to our 27 September 2026 snapshot, 10,000 AZN (the 8–12k band) mostly buys a 2002–2010 Opel Astra, Kia Rio, older Mercedes C-Class or Lada (VAZ). 15,000 AZN buys a 2012–2018 Chevrolet Cruze or Hyundai Elantra, or a 2000s Mercedes E-Class; 20,000 AZN a 2012–2020 Hyundai Elantra, Chevrolet Equinox or Kia Optima; and 30,000 AZN a 2012–2017 Hyundai Santa Fe or Kia Sorento, or a 2023–2026 Chinese crossover.
What model year and mileage does each budget get you?
For each budget we took a ±20% price band (for example, "15k" = 13,000–17,000 AZN) and read the year and mileage from the titles of the 100 newest listings in the band. The median is the middle value when listings are sorted: half are below it, half above. The range in brackets is the middle 50%, i.e. the "typical" band.
| Budget (price band) | Listings | Median year (middle half) | Median mileage, km (middle half) | Most common makes (per 100 listings) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10k (8,000–12,000 AZN) | 6,734 | 2007 (2002–2010) | 268,500 (222,000–348,000) | Mercedes 18, Kia 13, Opel 12; Nissan, Toyota, Lada 6 each |
| 15k (13,000–17,000 AZN) | 4,951 | 2011 (2007–2015) | 260,000 (186,000–327,500) | Chevrolet 20, Hyundai 18, Mercedes 17, Kia 12, Toyota 8 |
| 20k (18,000–22,000 AZN) | 3,521 | 2014 (2011–2017) | 219,000 (155,500–270,000) | Hyundai 21, Mercedes 15, Kia 13, Chevrolet 11; Toyota and BMW 8 each |
| 30k (26,000–34,000 AZN) | 3,202 | 2016 (2014–2021) | 165,000 (90,000–225,000) | Hyundai 26, Kia 14, Toyota 11, Changan 9; BMW and Mercedes 8 each |
Two things stand out. First, moving from 10k to 20k makes the median car 7 years younger and cuts mileage by roughly 50,000 km. Second, in the cheapest band half the listings show more than 268,000 km — for such a car the condition of the engine, gearbox and suspension matters more than the price. Some listings do not state mileage in the title (24 of 100 in the 10k band), so ask the seller.
What can you buy for 10,000 and 15,000 AZN?
8,000–12,000 AZN. Among the 100 newest listings the most common are the Opel Astra (11 listings, 1998–2010), Kia Rio (9, 2005–2012), Mercedes C-Class (7, 1995–2001), Lada/VAZ (6, 2009–2015) and Chevrolet Cruze (4, 2012–2015). The choice here is between a newer, simpler car and an older car from a higher class: the same money buys a 2013 Lada or a 1998 Mercedes. For a first car the first option usually makes more sense — parts are cheap and easy to find, and a small engine keeps day-to-day costs down.
13,000–17,000 AZN. The leaders are the Mercedes E-Class (12 listings, 2000–2007), Chevrolet Cruze (10, 2012–2018, median year 2015), Hyundai Elantra (7, 2007–2015), Toyota Prius (4, 2007–2010) and Hyundai Sonata (4, 2008–2010). The median year is 2011, so 15,000 AZN means a compact sedan that is 10–15 years old. With a hybrid Prius, have the battery checked separately at a service centre.
What changes at 20,000 and 30,000 AZN?
18,000–22,000 AZN. The Hyundai Elantra is the clear leader: 14 of 100 listings, model years 2012–2020, median 2016. It is followed by the Chevrolet Equinox (7, 2017–2021), BMW 5 Series (528, 6 listings, 2013–2014), Kia Optima and Ford Fusion (5 each). This band also includes 2020–2025 Ladas (4 listings) — again a choice between a new or low-mileage basic car and a ten-year-old executive sedan.
26,000–34,000 AZN. This is crossover territory: Hyundai Santa Fe (15 listings, 2012–2017), Kia Sorento (7, 2013–2017) and the Toyota Land Cruiser family (7, 2008–2011). What is new is Chinese brands: 13 of 100 listings are Changan, BYD, Jetour and others, mostly 2023–2026 model years with low mileage. That is one reason median mileage drops to 165,000 km. Before buying, check whether the model has official service and parts in Azerbaijan.
You can check whether a specific car's price matches the market in the "What's my car worth?" tool by entering make, model, year and mileage; for a general price band there is also a calculator. Why a falling median does not always mean "the market got cheaper" is explained in our piece on the composition effect.
How much does it cost to run a car per year?
The purchase price is only the start. Every car listing page on Prayk has an "Annual cost of ownership" block that adds up compulsory insurance, the roadworthiness test, fuel and estimated servicing, while depreciation is shown separately. Here is that calculation for two typical first cars (15,000 km a year, AI-92 petrol):
| Cost item | 1.4 L, 2015, 15,000 AZN | 2.4 L, 2015, 30,000 AZN |
|---|---|---|
| Fuel | 1,294 AZN (7.5 L/100 km) | 1,725 AZN (10 L/100 km) |
| Servicing (estimate) | 900 AZN | 900 AZN |
| Compulsory insurance | 50 AZN | 100 AZN |
| Roadworthiness test + recycling fee | 50 AZN | 50 AZN |
| Total per year (per month) | ≈2,294 AZN (≈191 AZN) | ≈2,775 AZN (≈231 AZN) |
| Depreciation (not in total) | ≈750 AZN | ≈1,500 AZN |
This is an estimate: real costs depend on your driving, the car's condition and mileage. Comprehensive (KASKO) cover is not included — see our guide to compulsory insurance and KASKO. If you are considering importing a car, the customs calculator shows estimated customs payments and the registration fee calculator shows the cost of registration.
What to check when buying your first car: a checklist
- Split the budget 85/15. Keep about 15% for the first costs after purchase: oil and filters, tyres, insurance, minor repairs.
- Compare mileage with age. An old car with far less mileage than the table's median has either barely been driven or had its odometer rolled back — ask for the service history.
- Check the documents. How to check liens, seizures and theft status on the government portal is covered in our guide "Before you buy a car".
- Check the seller. The "Check a phone number" page shows how many listings were posted from the seller's number and whether there were complaints — a way to spot a dealer posing as a private seller.
- Do not skip diagnostics. A computer diagnostic and a lift inspection cost less than a major repair after purchase.
- Take your time. If the right model is not available yet, save your search to get notified of new listings, and browse the price drops page.
All listings are in the Cars section: set the price filter to the bands in the table and narrow down by make and year.
Frequently asked questions
Can you buy a good car for 10,000 AZN?
Yes, but expect an older car: as of 27 September 2026 the 8,000–12,000 AZN band has a median model year of 2007 and median mileage of 268,500 km. In this budget a simple model in good condition (Kia Rio, Opel Astra, Lada) usually causes fewer headaches than an old premium sedan.
Which make is best value for a first car?
There is no universal answer, but value comes down to three things: the price and availability of parts, how well mechanics know the model, and how easy it is to resell. Models with many listings on Prayk (for example the Hyundai Elantra and Chevrolet Cruze in the 15–20k band) offer both more choice and more future buyers.
How do I know if a car's price is fair?
Enter make, model, year and mileage in the "What's my car worth?" tool — the result is based on prices of similar Prayk listings. The listing page also shows a market comparison. Remember that these are asking prices, not sale prices.
How much will the car cost to run after I buy it?
By Prayk's estimate, a 2015 sedan with a 1.4 L engine driven 15,000 km a year costs about 2,294 AZN a year (191 AZN a month), and a 2.4 L crossover about 2,775 AZN; most of that is fuel. Depreciation is calculated separately.
A new Chinese car or a used Korean crossover?
The 26,000–34,000 AZN band has both: 2012–2017 Hyundai Santa Fe and Kia Sorento alongside 2023–2026 Changan and BYD models. A new car wins on mileage and warranty; a used one has a wide base of parts and mechanics and an established resale market. Check the service network for the specific model before deciding.
Sources and methodology
Figures come from Prayk's public catalogue API on 27 September 2026: the Cars category in four price bands (8,000–12,000, 13,000–17,000, 18,000–22,000 and 26,000–34,000 AZN). Listing counts are totals for each band; make, model, year and mileage were read from the titles of the 100 newest listings in each band (mileage is stated in 76–89 of them). Medians and 25th–75th percentiles are calculated over those listings; model counts are a small sample and only indicate direction. Annual costs come from Prayk's "Annual cost of ownership" calculation (2026 rates, approximate) for two example configurations.
